Wildfire strikes at gold mine

May 21, 2018 | 8:00 AM

Wildfire Management was called out to suppress a manmade fire at the Seabee Gold Operation May 12.

According to the Ministry of Environment, a helicopter and firefighters responded to the mine site, located about 125 kilometers northeast of La Ronge, after company officials called for assistance. Staff had been doing controlled burning at the site during the day and, because of weather conditions, nearby trees and vegetation caught fire. The fire did not leave the mine site, but burned about 27 hectares of forest.

‘It’s in what we call mop up, where it’s contained and not going to spread,” a ministry spokesperson told larongeNOW. “They’re just extinguishing any hot spots and ensuring it’s completely out.”

According to data from Environment Canada, the temperature reached a high of 26.9 °C. Wind gusts of up to 54 km/h were recorded on the day wildfire crews were called.
