New youth soccer club launching soon

Air Ronge Council threw their support behind a new soccer club launching in a couple of months.

Organizer Erin Layton addressed council at a regular meeting Tuesday asking for permission to use the soccer fields in Air Ronge, a spot to place a shed to hold supplies and for access to a portable toilet. She said the club is currently working with Soccer Saskatchewan to become established and the group hopes to be operating by the end of August.

“The plan is to offer fall soccer and to see what the interest is and how our coaching goes, because we have to get all of our coaches in place,” Layton said. “We have to see after that point if we would join Soccer Saskatchewan for the summer season May 1 to [the end of] October.”

Layton also told council the club also has a grant writing committee in place, which has already submitted applications for funding. She noted, however, start up costs won’t be extensive as soccer is a relatively cheap sport to play. The committee has yet to received word back if any applications were successful, but Layton added there likely won’t be any issues with getting started.

In response to Layton’s request, council granted the club permission to use the fields, place a shed on village property and access a portable toilet. Council also unanimously passed a motion to give the club $1,000 to help cover initial costs and told Layton she could use council chambers for a coaching clinic scheduled for July.

“Soccer Saskatchewan has said they’ll come up and train our coaches… as soon as we have 10,” she said.
