La Ronge breaks heat record set in 1976

A heat record was broken in La Ronge Wednesday as the temperature soared to 29°C.

That’s according to Environment Canada Meteorologist John Paul Cragg, who said the old record of 26.7°C for May 23 was set back in 1976. Climate data has been collected in La Ronge since 1924, Cragg said, and as a result of the climbing temperature yesterday a heat warning was issued to advise the public to take precautions.

“We’ve got some really warm air streaming up into the La Ronge area and, because of that, we have the heat warning out,” Cragg said. “Heat warnings are issued for a two-day period where we believe temperatures will get up to 29°C as a daytime high and won’t sink below 14°C as an overnight low.”

Cragg recommended residents be cautious about the heat, especially if there’s isn’t any air conditioning readily available. Since the temperature didn’t cool down much last night, he said people can be affected by the long duration of heat, and those with medical issues should also be careful.
