La Ronge RCMP warn of telephone, Internet scammers

Jun 5, 2018 | 10:00 AM

The La Ronge RCMP have warned about telephone and Internet scams targeting residents in the tri-community.

According to a public service announcement, the scammers may be posing as Veteran’s Affairs offices, the Canada Revenue Agency, lottery officials and even police officers. The RCMP said anyone who receives such calls or messages should not provide any personal information and end the communication.

According to the RCMP, if calls or messages seem suspicious or too good to be true, they likely are. The police advised residents never to provide a credit card, Social Insurance Number or payment information over the phone or social media to people they don’t know and asked the public to contact them if they’re unsure about a situation.

“RCMP officers will never contact citizens via social media or telephone indicating they owe money to clear an arrest warrant,” the RCMP said.
