New garbage truck and nearly 400 bins coming to Air Ronge

Changes are coming to garbage collection in Air Ronge after council approved the purchase of a new truck and nearly 400 bins.

Air Ronge Mayor Gordon Stomp said he expects new truck, with a mechanical arm lift, to be delivered by December. Ordered from a Regina company, the truck carries an estimated price tag of $230,000. The bins will cost another $100 each, Stomp noted, and every household will be given a new one and their current bins will be taken away.

“Our truck is not that great, and it’s a two-man operation,” Stomp said, adding the new truck will allow a single employee to do the same job.

“The [old] bins will get picked up and we’ll put them in storage somewhere,” he said. “We’ll see if someone is interested in them.”

Stomp said he believes residents will be particularly happy about the purchase of new bins, as the ones being used now aren’t ideal for their intended purpose. He also said he wasn’t sure if the new truck will lead to changes in garbage restrictions, as taxpayers at a recent public meeting wanted to know if the puchase meant they could start using single-use shopping bags to hold trash. The issue will likely be brought up with the Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Corporation, Stomp said.
