Southend residents given the green light to return home

Jun 26, 2018 | 7:36 AM

Hundreds of Southend residents, who were forced to leave their homes last week due to the threat of a wildfire, have received the news they’ve been anxiously waiting for.

The general evacuation order has been lifted.

A statement lifting the order was issued late Monday afternoon by the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation’s Emergency Operations Centre, based on the recommendation of the Ministry of Environment. The ‘Woods’ wildfire burning near Southend has grown to over 9,300 hectares in size, but is no longer considered a threat to the community.

Due to ongoing smoke concerns some residents at higher risk will not be going home yet, including the elderly, children under age one, and people with respiratory problems.
