National Film Board of Canada wrapping up shooting in La Ronge

Today is the last day of shooting for a National Film Board of Canada crew producing a short video about reconnecting with traditions.

“I grew up in La Ronge and had been raised in a fishing community where I was taken out at an early age,” actor and director Janine Windolph said. “I never really caught anything, but at least I always tried with the family.”

The 12-minute film titled After the Thaw documents Windolph’s return to La Ronge with her sons Dawlari and Corwyn as she teaches them traditional Cree activities. With assistance from her mother, Marian Otter, Windolph said they spent time foraging during the first day of shooting Wednesday before moving on to fishing today. Coming from Regina, she added her sons were disconnected about where food comes from.

“We wanted to really document everything fresh,” Windolph said. “It’s their first time using a fishing rod, and learning to cast and jig. It’s all about the experience and passing it on to the next generation.”

Windolph also noted the film has been a work in progress for about 18 months since she met film producer Jon Montes. Since then the pair have been developing the story, which he said is a bit different than what they set out to do. Montes noted there’s a lot of content packed into the 12 minutes and he believes the themes will resonate with viewers.

“We’ll be editing throughout late summer and into the fall,” he said. “We want this film to get out to people, so it would be great to organize a screening in La Ronge.”
