Powwow group forms in La Ronge to spur interest among residents

Volunteers from the tri-community are educating residents about the powwow tradition to get more people dancing.

“We just all got together to talk about how we’re going to make it happen,” Cathy Wheaton said of the newly formed La Ronge Powwow Group. “Before we even started meeting, we were talking to people and everybody has been excited about wanting to do it.”

The group’s first public event was held Tuesday at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, where residents were invited to learn about powwow dances and music, as well as the various types of dancers and the regalia they wear. Wheaton described the session as an introduction to powwow since many of the attendees had no experience with it before. A second similar event will occur on Aug. 21 for anyone else interested in joining.

There are several reasons Wheaton said the group wanted to bring the powwow tradition to La Ronge. She noted dancers have told her it can provide healing aspects to life, as well as encourage a healthy lifestyle. People also dance for personal reasons, Wheaton added, as it helps some let go of issues which are dragging them down.

“I’ve heard stories of communities all over the place that have started dancing in their community, that it’s evolved over the years and how positive of an experience it was,” she said. “When I watch people powwow dance, it makes me feel really good.”
