Mural planning meeting tonight at Alex Robertson Public Library

Jul 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Residents of the tri-community are welcomed to join a mural planning meeting tonight at the Alex Robertson Public Library.

Facilitated by artist/writer-in-residence Miriam Körner and artist Allen Morrow, attendees will be asked to share their ideas about what to include on a 12-by-48-foot mural with a reconciliation theme. While the location of the mural hasn’t been finalized, Körner said once a concept sketch is completed, it will be given to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band for approval.

“We have a location in mind, so we’re making the mural the size to fit the location,” she said. “Some people might have sketches or ideas already and Allen Morrow will … take all of the ideas and put them into a small sketch for a mural.”

Körner also noted she expects Morrow to develop a good copy of the sketch by August, so participants will be able to paint the mural this year. She added, however, it all depends on how long it takes the group to get approval. Materials for the mural will be covered through the provincial Community Initiative Fund.

The idea to create a mural was brought forward earlier this year while Körner and other artists were delivering Reconciliation Through Art sessions at the library. A small group of participants broke away to do a needle-felted quilt project, she said, and some people wanted to look for other ways to express their ideas as well. The meeting tonight starts at 6:30 p.m.

“If [anyone] can’t make it our to the meeting tonight, it doesn’t mean they can’t join us later on when it comes to the mural painting process,” Körner said.
