New school bus provider for La Ronge and other northern communities

The new provider of school bus transportation services in La Ronge and other northern communities said there likely won’t be any changes to routes or pick-up times in September.

“If there is going to be any changes, it will be done very gradually so there’s not any real interference with anything,” All-In-One Conveyance Ltd. owner Larry Lowenberg said. “We have the greenlight to start hiring people, so we’re going to start asking drivers of the past contractor to contact us …  and take over their original routes.”

Lowenberg was awarded a five-year contract to provide bussing services with Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) at a special board meeting earlier this month. He’s taking over from NorthWind Bus Lines, which began providing services to the school division in 2008. Lowenberg will be responsible for transporting students in Air Ronge, Buffalo Narrows, Green Lake and La Ronge.

Before the school year begins, Lowenberg said he’s expecting a fleet of brand new busses from the United States to arrive. He noted when the buses are delivered, they’ll be placed on rented land until he can find property to accommodate the business on a permanent basis. Lowenberg also isn’t concerned about ensuring he’ll be ready to provide services in six weeks.

“I have fairly extensive experience,” he said. “I started bussing for NLSD in 1980. We enjoyed a very successful situation where we didn’t have any problems conveying the students to school.”

According to NLSD Director of Education Jason Young, the division sends out tenders every five years for bussing services. When selecting the winning bid, he noted the board examines costs, safety, comfort, reliability and experience.

“I don’t anticipate any sort of hiccups with them operating in the fall,” Young said. “If there are, that’s a result of them working out some of those hiccups coming back to it and being new again. I don’t see that being an issue only because they have done it before.”
