Gala dinner aims to create Indigenous programming at P.A. National Park

Funds raised at a gala dinner in Waskesiu will benefit Indigenous people in and around the region.

The Action for Youth Gala, planned for August 4, was brought about through a partnership between the Friends of Prince Albert National Park and former NHL player Carlin Nordstrom’s Kisik Sports. Ernie Scoles, president of the Friends of Prince Albert National Park, said he hopes to provide youths with educational and language-based programs to keep them away from nefarious activities.

“There’s so much bad stuff out there that can sway the youth in a matter of minutes,” Scoles said. “This is just to show them that there’s a fun alternative, a healthy alternative, besides going out and doing stuff that isn’t good for you.”

He said he hopes the programming provides youths with experiences in the park they may not otherwise have access to.

Good food and live entertainment are on tap for the evening. Top Chef Canada participant Rich Francis is preparing and cooking the evening’s menu, and comedian Don Burnstick was tapped for the night’s entertainment. Scoles said Burnstick has been performing for more years than he can count.

“He can make people laugh, he can make people cry. He delivers a very powerful message through laughter, and it’s all about healing,” Scoles said.

Tickets for the event are still available, Scoles said. Individual tickets cost $150 and tables of eight cost $1,050.
