An athlete from northern Saskatchewan could be selected for the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in the United Arab Emirates after a successful performance in Nova Scotia.

From July 31 to Aug. 4, 21-year-old Tyler Tsannie of Wollaston Lake competed at the 2018 Special Olympics Canada National Summer Games, where he earned to two silver medals. Tsannie’s training coach Kelly Hayukewich said he placed in the top-10 in all the events and was rewarded medals in the long jump and the 400-metre dash.

“They’re meeting today and tomorrow to select Team Canada, who will compete at the Summer Games in Abu Dubai in March,” he said. “There’s a chance he can be selected, but there’s so much competition and strong athletes. There’s about 10 athletes from Canada who go.”

In order to advance to nationals, Tsannie competed in provincials held in Moose Jaw last year. Hayukewich said Tsannie finished in first place in all of his events including the 400, 800, 1,500, and 3,000-metre races along with the long jump. Tsannie should find out if he qualified for worlds by the end of the month, Hayukewich said.
