Bestselling author Harold Johnson releases new book honouring late brother

Sep 3, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Written as a memorial to his late brother, Harold Johnson’s new book Clifford is a piece of literary work a decade in the making.

“I wrote it as though I was back at the house where Clifford and I grew up, and I’m there for the funeral and camping in the yard,” he said about the beginning of the book. “Him and I had a lot of conversations growing up. Even as a kid, he was brilliant.”

Clifford, which was officially published Aug. 28, is Johnson’s eighth book and includes chapters written in both fiction and non-fiction. He said the true accounts in the novel involve growing up in Molanosa with his family and what it was like, as well as stories about his late brother who wanted to be a scientist. The surreal portions of the book are about some of the conversation Johnson had with Clifford, along with the funeral scenes of camping in the yard at Molanosa.

Johnson’s late brother was killed by a drunk driver in 1985 and Clifford is meant to honour him.

“The man who I had all my interesting conversations with has been dead for 30 years, so I wrote them into the book and that’s the fiction part,” Johnson said. “There’s no message. It’s not entertainment either. It was written as a memorial to my brother.”

Johnson recommends the book to be read by a wide audience including those who lost a family member or are interested in topics like thought experiments, physics, philosophy and history. Johnson expects copies of Clifford to be available for sale this week at Robertson Trading Ltd. and the Lac La Ronge Visitors Centre.
