Registration for winter sports in La Ronge attracts hundreds

Churchill Community High School was bustling with parents Wednesday as they registered their children in one of two local clubs.

The La Ronge Skating Club and La Ronge Minor Hockey Club held their main registration events together in the school’s mini-gymnasium. According to skating club President Aubrey Boyer, the event is meant to be a one-stop shop for parents looking to enroll their children in winter sports.

“Usually we get about 70 or so kids, so we’ll see if everyone comes in tonight,” she said. “Our season starts in October, so they might trickle in over the next little while.”

While the club does offer junior and senior programs, Boyer noted most participants take part in CanSkate. CanSkate offers kids basic training in skating, and those involved can wear either figure skates or hockey skates. Boyer said she expects most registrants will be younger this year, as some of the more advanced skaters have graduated and moved away.

With 122 skating clubs in Saskatchewan, Boyer added the one in La Ronge is smaller in comparison to others. Training gets underway Oct. 17, and a family skate is planned for Dec. 20. The showcase event is scheduled for March 7.

“I’ve been involved with the club for about three years now and it’s been steady,” Boyer said.

Meanwhile, minor hockey President Brad Johns said he was hoping to see between 100 and 120 kids registered at the event. He said parents will still be able to sign up their children online until Sept. 14, then there will be a late fee after that. The club is expected to start during the first week of October and Johns said he’s unsure if more volunteers will be needed to be coaches or managers.

“It’s fairly reasonable,” Johns said about the club’s size. “Our numbers are probably smaller, but we have teams in each division and some divisions have two teams.”

The minor hockey club includes divisions from Initiation to Midget.
