Cravings is the new Mel Hegland concession operator

Cravings Late Night Food in Air Ronge is the new concession operator at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

Business owners Jamie and Charmaine Charles have already operated the concession three times in the last month including two exhibition games, as well as the Ice Wolves home opener last weekend. The concession will also be open during hockey tournaments, events and when the curling league gets underway, but Jamie Charles said it’s been a slow start to the season.

“It’s my first time doing something like this,” he said. “We have the restaurant and it’s extremely busy all the time there. We’re also busy with catering. I’m not sure why I decided to take on this side challenge, but it seems to be doing alright so far.”

During the Ice Wolves home opener, the concession was offering the basics like burgers, fries and drinks, but Charles noted he wants to start offering healthier choices throughout the season. He also added he’s working with the Ice Wolves who operate the concession upstairs to ensure the two sides aren’t selling the same products.

Those formerly on the lease, Robin Suderman and his partner Vivian, end their agreement with the Town of La Ronge at the end of January after they struggled to make a profit. At the time, Suderman said the beginning of the year was good, but by December revenue fell so bad they weren’t able to make their monthly $600 lease payment. Charles doesn’t believe his business will experience such difficulties.

“Just the few days we’ve been open, we’ve done really well,” he said. “We’re experienced at this, so we seemed to get our system down fast. We have a method and we just adapt it to over there and it seems to be doing fine. As far as it seems now, it looks like it’s going to be a success.”
