NorthWinds receives NLSD busing contract for remainder of school year

Sep 21, 2018 | 5:08 PM

NorthWinds Bus Lines Ltd. has once again been contracted by the (NLSD) Northern Lights School Division to provide transportation to students in Air Ronge and La Ronge.

The change will be in effect for the remainder of 2018-2019 school year, according to a media release, with service starting Sept. 24 for Gordon Denny Community School and special needs students, followed by Churchill Community High School and Pre-Cam Community School on Sept. 26. After the school division’s board of education suspended its contracted with Allinone Conveyance Sept. 15, members later decided to terminate it Monday. There was no school bus service in either community all week.

larongeNOW reached out to the NLSD board of education to gain more insight into recent decisions but did not receive a response by our deadline.

According to the NLSD 2016-2017 annual report, the division was responsible for transporting 1,399 students throughout the entire region at the price of $1,495 per person. The report states 35 buses were contracted to do the job at the cost of nearly $2.1 million each school year.

With the NorthWinds taking over service next week, business owner Anne Calladine stated pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten parents will be contacted using the information supplied to the schools. She also expects a high volume of calls, so people are asked to leave a message and someone will return the call.

“While you don’t need to register your children for busing, it is suggested to call to confirm busing times for pick up and drop off,” Calladine stated.
