NLSD chairperson apologizes for busing fiasco in tri-communities

On behalf of the Northern Lights School Division (NLSD), board of education chairperson Joey McCallum issued an apology Monday for the busing fiasco in the tri-communities this month.

“NLSD apologies for any inconvenience that this might have [had] on the parents,” he said. “We thank the parents, guardians and the community for their patience and cooperation on this manner, but especially to the students of La Ronge.”

Busing for students attending Churchill Community High School, Gordon Denny Community School and Pre-Cam Community School was abruptly cancelled last week after Allinone Conveyance had its contract terminated with Northern Lights. McCallum noted the board decided to do so Sept. 15 for safety reasons, which he added is a priority for the school division. NorthWinds Bus Lines Ltd. was subsequently contracted to provide services for the remainder of the school year and McCallum said the board will evaluate how to proceed next school year in the coming months.

There are two reasons McCallum identified for why Allinone was initially awarded a five-year contract in July despite not having buses or office space at the time. He stated the company had previous experience providing service through La Ronge School Bus Lines Ltd. and submitted a reasonable bid.
