‘It was just unreal’: La Ronge man wins 1978 Indy Pace Car

La Ronge’s Percy Roske didn’t believe it at first when he received a phone call from Access Communications earlier this month letting him know he won their 40th Anniversary Car Raffle.

“It was just unreal,” he said. “I was just ecstatic. It wasn’t until the next day it set in that I won.”

With an estimated value of $45,000, Roske won a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Limited Edition 25th Anniversary Indy Pace Car. The car is one of 6,502 ever made and currently has 1,902 miles. Roske noted it was likely bubble-wrapped and kept in storage not long after it was purchased in 1978, adding Access found it in Ontario and brought it to Regina by rail for the raffle.

The corvette has several uncommon features such as special two-tone paint, as well as unique front air deflectors and a rear spoiler. It also includes a MX1 automatic transmission, a 350 L48 engine, limited-edition decals, leather bucket seats, as well as power door locks, steering and windows. Roske said it’s the most valuable prize he’s ever won, which he did by purchasing $10 worth of tickets for the raffle in May.

“I’m going to keep it for a while, but it’s not the car for me at this time in my life,” he said. “Retirement is coming around the corner and I think I’m just going to sell it.”

As the car is street-legal, Roske took it for a drive in La Ronge Monday for the first time since bringing it to town. He stated there’s a few rattles and squeaks, but overall it was a “very nice ride.”
