Islanders to defend NSFL championship against T-Wolves

Oct 2, 2018 | 9:00 AM

The Cumberland House Islanders and Sandy Bay T-Wolves placed first and second in six-a-side Northern Saskatchewan Football League (NSFL) action. Regardless of games remaining in the regular season, their records of 4-0 and 3-1 respectively, means they finish in the top two positions and will play each other at Max Clunie Field in Prince Albert for the Ralph Pilz Trophy on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.

“It is going to be a very exciting game,” Mark Williment, superintendent of schools for the Northern Lights School Division, said. “These two teams played once before and it was a close one…so anybody can win this game. People should look forward to a great match.”

Both teams will move on to provincials, but the winner of the game will receive home field advantage and the other team will have to travel for its first provincial game.

Last Tuesday, the defending champion Islanders defeated the La Loche Lakers by a score of 100-0. Peter Laliberte, Percy McKay, and Jesse McKay each scored their first ever touchdowns for the Islanders. The Lakers, comprised mostly of Grade 9 and 10 players, were commended for their continued efforts throughout a tough learning season.

“The coaches on that team have done an excellent job renewing the interest in football and because they are starting with younger players that will be a team to watch in the years to come,” Williment said.

In a double header last Thursday, the Beauval Voyageurs travelled to Sandy Bay while Pinehouse Lakers travelled to Creighton to play the Kodiaks. Raddick Maguire scored three touchdowns for the second consecutive game to lead the T-Wolves to a 61-0 victory. In Creighton, the hometown Kodiaks defeated the Lakers 61-18.

In nine-a-side action, the La Ronge Churchill Chargers hosted the Humboldt Mohawks in a 19-37 loss.

“It is their second season in nine-a-side and they competed very well. Unfortunately, they just came up short and won’t be in the playoffs,” Williment said.

This week marks the fifth and final week of six-a-side football in the NSFL. Sandy Bay plays La Loche in Prince Albert. Creighton will travel to Beauval and Pinehouse will visit Cumberland House. In nine-a-side action, La Ronge travels to Nipawin.
