Drivers urged to stay sober, stay alert this holiday long weekend

Oct 5, 2018 | 2:57 PM

An extra police presence will be visible on Saskatchewan roadways this Thanksgiving long weekend, and motorists are reminded to driver sober and take care when on the road.

RCMP officers around the country will be conducting targeted traffic stops at various locations throughout the weekend as part of a national awareness campaign. Police will be out at various check stops around the local area as well as part of Operation Impact to raise awareness about driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

With a busy holiday weekend upon us, RCMP are also reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention while on the road.

“This weekend, we’re focusing on the big four, which is impaired driving, seatbelts, aggressive driving and distracted driving,” Sgt. Conrad Logan with RCMP traffic services said. “Take your time when you’re trying to get there, keep your speeds down, there’s other people on the highway and we want to make sure that everybody gets there safe.”

Logan said drivers should also plan extra time for travelling and prepare for changes in weather. There is a possibility of snow in parts of Saskatchewan over the holiday long weekend.

“Drive safe, enjoy the weekend, enjoy time with family and friends,” Logan added. “Wear your seatbelts and be respectful of other drivers on the highway.”

Operation Impact is one of two national traffic safety awareness campaigns organized by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. Municipal police forces, including the Prince Albert Police Service, will also be conducting targeted traffic enforcement operations over the Thanksgiving holiday.
