Patterson Park, cannabis and more to be discussed at public meeting tonight

Oct 16, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A public meeting tonight at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre will be about more than just Patterson Park.

That’s according to La Ronge Mayor Ron Woytowich who said council decided to expand the conversation to include several other topics like public works. He noted additional information will also be given about a new public works building, the Mel Hegland Uniplex and the La Ronge Airport. Aura Cannabis Executive Vice-President Andrew Gordon also confirmed he will be at the meeting to talk about the marijuana store he plans to open in the first quarter of 2019.

“The actual intent of the meeting was to talk about downtown, what to do and the plans for the park, but common sense kind of said people would be interested in knowing a lot more,” Woytowich said.

With the meeting set for 7 p.m., attendees are also expected to find out the results of an online survey council released in August about Patterson Park. It was filled out by close to 500 people and asked what tri-community residents would like to see done with the downtown green space. Woytowich added Patterson Park will be part of the discussion, but council wants to talk about parks and recreation in a general sense as well.

In an email to larongeNOW, Gordon stated he’ll be sharing information about cannabis legalization, which occurs across Canada starting at midnight. While he doesn’t plan to have a store open for at least several months, Gordon noted online services will be available in advance of that timeframe.

“We are so pleased with the reception we’ve received in La Ronge so far, and while we have not yet secured a location, we look forward to continuing to consult with the community in the coming months to build upon our relationships,” Gordon stated.
