La Ronge Taskforce on hold indefinitely

Oct 25, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Council decided to put the La Ronge Taskforce on hold indefinitely only six months into a two-year mandate.

That’s according to Chairperson Anne Calladine, who said taskforce members will no longer be meeting until council decides to revive the initiative. She noted it would have been good to keep it going but added if council doesn’t have the time commitment for it, it’s best to put the taskforce on pause.

“If that’s what works best for the time right now, we’re all in favour of doing it,” Calladine said. “We want to work with the town when the town is ready.”

The taskforce was formally launched in March and other members with the project are vice-chairperson Toby Greschner, Daniel Irvine, Guy Penney, Marilyn Scott, Tia Watt and Scott Robertson. They were supposed to be responsible for helping guide council through a transformational change in the municipality and delivered an Interim Action Plan with recommendations to council in May. The taskforce last met in June when they met with council to discuss the document.

In an email to larongeNOW, acting-administrator Robbie Bender said the taskforce was temporarily put on hold in September to allow council time to assess current priorities and enter budget discussions for next year. Calladine said she is hopeful the town will be able to make a commitment to the taskforce sometime in the future, but added she wasn’t sure if all taskforce members will still be interested in coming back if it’s on hold for too long.

“That would be a concern that may come up if nothing goes forward,” she said. “It depends on how the town approaches it.”

In the taskforce’s Interim Action Plan for council, highlights of the recommendations were developing partnerships with the La Ronge Arts Council and Boreal Outdoor Recreation Association, creating a plan for a multi-modal along Highways 2 and 102, and to develop a range of options to incentivise improvements to downtown commercial businesses and properties.
