Ice Wolves looking for support with five home games in coming weeks

Nov 15, 2018 | 11:00 AM

With five home games scheduled before the end of the month, La Ronge Ice Wolves Head Coach Evan Vossen hopes to see fans in the stands supporting the team.

“Anytime you get to play in front of fans is a big boost for the guys,” he said. “When there’s more people, you can feel the energy in the building and I think that translates to the guys on the ice as well.”

With one away game Nov. 17 against the Melfort Mustangs, the Ice Wolves play at the Mel Hegland Uniplex Nov. 18 in back-to-back action against the same squad. The Ice Wolves will then host the Notre Dame Hounds Nov. 22, the Melville Millionaires Nov. 23, the Estevan Bruins Nov. 28 and the Weyburn Red Wings Nov. 30. The Nov. 18 home game against the Mustangs starts at 5 p.m. while all others begin at 7:30 p.m.

With such a diverse lineup of teams coming to La Ronge, Vossen said the Ice Wolves will have to work on their own game instead of preparing for any team in specific. He also noted it’s important to have a solid fan base at the upcoming games, adding he thinks the team could do better because of it.

“Yeah, there’s a comfort level when we’re at home, but we have to play the right way, and take advantage of our rink and our fans,” he said.

With the Ice Wolves currently sitting at six wins and 12 losses in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Vossen said there’s still a chance they could earn a playoff spot as they’re only two or three wins away from catching up to the opposing squads. At the Ice Wolves most recent home match Nov. 13 against Nipawin Hawks, they lost 2-1 but Vossen said it was a good game and everyone played well.

“We’re in a tough division this year, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of the playoffs or anything like that,” he said. “Our focus for us as we go here is to get out of this losing skid and get back to work. I thought that last game was a step forward to that.”
