The La Ronge Nordic Ski Club have several upcoming events to keep tri-community residents busy during the colder months.

Starting tomorrow (Nov. 23) between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., the club is hosting a TGIF fundraiser featuring cabbage rolls, perogies and a silent auction, which will be followed by its annual Ski Show and Swap Nov. 24. Both events will occur at the Royal Canadian Legion and those interested in the ski swap can drop off equipment between 11 a.m. and noon.

“Fresh Air Experience and Genes Sports will be on site with new ski equipment,” Club President Heather Bernardin said. “More information can be found on our ski club Facebook page.”

A number of other events are also scheduled including coaching clinics Dec. 1 and 2, the Sask Cup Races Dec. 8 and 9, and the year will end with the Solstice Ski to the Summit Dec. 21. Bernardin noted the Solstice Ski is held to celebrate the first day of winter, adding its popular among club members and includes food and hot chocolate.

The Don Allen Saskaloppet is the club’s largest event and it will occur March 1 and 2 next year. It draws in hundreds of athletes from Saskatchewan and other provinces, Bernardin said, stating it includes races spanning five kilometers to 85 kilometers. Any residents wanting to learn how to ski are also encouraged to contact the club as there will be lessons for children and adults once per week starting soon.

“We haven’t started them up quite yet because they just started grooming this week,” she said. “We do thank the Saskatchewan Parks staff, as well as volunteers, for doing the grooming of Nut Point and Don Allen.”

Bernardin also wanted to remind residents about only using the ski trails for the intended purpose. That means walking, biking, snowshoeing or any kind of motorized activities are prohibited. The trails are used for training, Bernardin stated, an athletes can come into dangerous situations if the tracks are disturbed.
