MP calls on Liberals to support Wollaston Lake all-season road

Nov 30, 2018 | 9:00 AM

Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River NDP MP Georgina Jolibois stood in the House of Commons Nov. 28 and called on the Liberals to support the Wollaston Lake road project.

“For 30 years, Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation has been fighting to get this all-season road done to make their community assessible,” Jolibois said. “Without it, they have to fly in their already overpriced food and supplies. Northerners deserve answers.”

By building an all-season road to the community, Jolibois believes it would make everyday life for the people living there more affordable. She also noted it could be used to create jobs and ensure the community’s well-being. An all-season road would make travelling to and from Hatchet Lake safer, Jolibois remarked, as people won’t have to cross an ice road or fly into the community.

Jolibois acknowledged the creation of such a road would also require funding from the province, but she said the federal government needs to support them.

“Why are the Liberals ignoring Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nation and refusing to complete the Wollaston Lake road project once and for all?” she asked.

In response to her questions, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rose from his seat and said no relationship to the Liberals is more important than with Indigenous Peoples. He noted his government is taking action in a number of areas such as ending boil water advisories, building new schools and roads for communities.

“We’re going to continue to work hand-in-hand with Indigenous communities right across this country to give them opportunities to grow their economies and have opportunities all Canadians have,” Trudeau said.
