Boreal Heartland opens retail space to sell natural and organic products

With a growing number of consumers wanting to eat healthier foods, a new store in Air Ronge is looking to meet the demand for natural and organic products in the tri-communities.

Located along Husky Ave., the store is operated by Boreal Heartland Forest Products and officially opened Dec. 4. It’s managed through the Keewatin Community Development Association by CEO Randy Johns, who said the business was inspired by the SaskMade Marketplace in Saskatoon. Boreal Heartland already sells its products at the marketplace like teas, and dried morels and chanterelle mushrooms.

“We wanted to give people a chance to buy those products, then we thought we might as well offer other natural and organic products,” Johns said. “We also have other products from Saskatchewan and western provinces that are sort of unique, especially products like haskap berry jam and syrup, organic pastas from Manitoba and dried apples from an orchard just outside Blaine Lake.”

Other locally manufactured products are also sold at the store such as wild rice and wild rice flour, Deb’s Greek Seasoning, tree fungus artwork and different oils and soaps. Johns noted there is still space for more inventory, but added he wants to find out what products sell the best and move forward from there. He’s also open to suggestions from the public about any other products there could be a demand for.
