La Ronge cannabis permit holder supportive of new town bylaw

Jan 2, 2019 | 4:00 PM

The permit holder for La Ronge’s soon-to-be pot shop doesn’t have any issues following the town’s new bylaw, which came into effect Jan. 1.

According to the bylaw, cannabis outlets and liquor retail stores must operate within the hours of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. between Monday to Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays and statutory holidays. Kiaro Executive Vice-President Andrew Gordon asked council to consider a 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. window instead, but said he had no expectations it would happen.

“Those are hours council and everyone who had been involved with the process came to a consensus around,” he said. “If that reflects the position of the community, we’re fully supportive of those hours and are happy to comply our operation within that framework.”

It’s also been a time of change recently for the company, Gordon noted, as management decided to rename the business from Aura Cannabis to Kiaro. He added using the name Aura Cannabis was causing some confusion with companies in the United States and Kiaro represents more of what they want to offer. Kiaro is an Italian word meaning transition from darkness to light and signifies the process Canadians will undergo during the early years of legalization.

Meanwhile, Gordon also confirmed the former CIBC location at the corner of La Ronge Ave. and Boardman St. will be site of the new store. The store is expected to open sometime this spring, but there will be some renovations at the building before it does. Gordon stated the company is aligning the rollout of the new stores with the available supply to ensure a good customer experience.

“Our Saskatoon store will be opening towards the end of this month and we hope to have a e-commerce service shortly after that as well,” he said. “Anyone from La Ronge would be able to log in and access the products we have available online.”
