Frosty fines for snow covered vehicles

Jan 8, 2019 | 1:00 PM

Scraping a small window as opposed to cleaning your whole car might save you a little time, but it could cost you in the end.

SGI is warning drivers that not only is travelling with reduced visibility dangerous, there are also monetary fines that can be issued to drivers who fail to properly remove all snow from their vehicles.

Media Relations Manager Tyler McMurchy named some key areas to focus on.

“Remove snow from the roof of your vehicle and the hood of your vehicle so you’re not dealing with blowing snow affecting your visibility or that of others on the road,” McMurchy said.

Drivers who fail to keep their windows free of obstruction could face a $125 fine.

McMurchy also noted drivers need to be mindful of their licence plates.

“Licence plates need to be clearly visible, that means plates must not be obstructed in any way that prevents them from being read, or accurately photographed by an enforcement system,” he said. “There is a $100 fine for driving a vehicle while the license plates are not visible.”

During the winter he said it’s a good idea to adjust driving speed and following distance while you’re out on the roads.

McMurchy noted if your vehicle is damaged by falling ice, snow or debris from another motorist, your insurance should cover the damage minus your deductible. In the event you’re able to get the plate number of the other vehicle you may be able to claim them as the at-fault driver.
