Special Olympics La Ronge hosts sanctioned ski races

Jan 14, 2019 | 1:00 PM

Dozens of athletes from northern Saskatchewan and Winnipeg competed at the cross-country skiing races held Jan. 12 at the Don Allen Trails.

The event was hosted by Special Olympics La Ronge and consisted of a variety of races of different lengths with 10 kilometers being the longest and 100 meters the shortest. According to event organizer Pam Sanderson, 42 athletes participated who came from Hall Lake, La Ronge, Sucker River and Winnipeg.

“Special Olympics Winnipeg drove here to attend our event and they said our Don Allen Trails are beautiful,” she said. “We always try to make those friendship and attend other events as well, so we’d really like to get to Winnipeg to meet their athletes and spend time building friendships.”

Sanderson noted the races were officially sanctioned by Special Olympics Canada and athletes were able to use their scores to qualify for other events. Between Feb. 8-10, athletes with the La Ronge chapter will be travelling to Regina for the Special Olympics Saskatchewan Winter Games and Sanderson added the recent event will serve to prepare them for the provincial competition. She stated local athletes will participate in both skiing and snowshoeing at the tournament.

With the temperature hovering around -15 C on Saturday, Sanderson said three times as many people competed in the races this year than compared to 2018. Last year’s event was hampered by cold temperatures around -40 C.

“Everybody who came had a smile on their face and I’m just grateful for all the community members we have who support our athletes,” Sanderson said. “It was a unified event. It was very social and the bottom line is Special Olympics is a lot of fun.”
