Chargers take second place at CCHS basketball tournament

Jan 16, 2019 | 10:51 AM

It was a second-place win for the Chargers at the Churchill Community High School Senior Boys Basketball Invitational over the weekend.

That’s according to Coach Derek Konga who said eight teams including Creighton, Cumberland House, Beauval, Buffalo Narrows, La Loche, La Ronge, Sandy Bay and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Senator Myles Venne School participated in the event. In the final match, La Ronge was up against Sandy Bay who narrowly defeated the hometown team by a 89-86 score. Creighton took third place with 66-56 over Cumberland House.

“The boys did really well,” Konga said. “I’m really happy with their play and their sportsmanship as well. They carry themselves with a lot of pride and confidence. When they lost, they kept their composure and they didn’t get mad or frustrated.”

So far this season, the Chargers have competed in four tournaments and Konga stated the team has been performing well. There will be at least two more tournaments in February with one located in Buffalo Narrows, before an alumni competition and playoffs occur in mid-March. Churchill will also be hosting a junior tournament in the coming weeks, where Konga noted the senior boys will be refereeing the games.
