RCMP, local guides work together to help man trapped on ice road

Jan 19, 2019 | 9:54 AM

RCMP officers worked with local guides to find a man in medical distress trapped in a vehicle on an ice road in frigid temperatures Friday night.

What was initially reported to be a sudden death, turned out to be a man in medical distress on Frobisher Lake, near Turnor Lake. Police say the man had an injured foot and was trapped inside a vehicle that had gotten stuck on the road. The vehicle’s tailpipe was blocked and the man reported feeling dizzy and confused as the vehicle filled with carbon monoxide. The man was unable to walk and was very cold, police said.

The incident happened around 7:25 p.m. Friday night.

RCMP officers were able to move the man to a vehicle belonging to a local guide and keep him him warm before traveling to meet an emergency medical services vehicle at the Birch Narrows Medical Clinic. The driver was then taken by La Loche Emergency Medical Services to the La Loche hospital.
