Fabric collage artwork on display in Mistasinihk Place

Jan 22, 2019 | 2:00 PM

Art comes in many shapes and forms, but fabric collage is the theme of an exhibit currently on display this month at La Ronge’s Mistasinihk Place.

Called In Stitches… Again, the exhibit marks the second time the La Ronge Arts Council chose to present fabric collage pieces in the gallery. In 2017, Hilary Johnstone led a workshop on how to create artwork from fabric, which led to the first exhibit in February 2018. This year the exhibit was organized by council chairperson Caron Dubnick.

“I’m impressed,” she said about the work on display. “We have a lot of people in town who are doing fibre-related work. The class we had last year was more of the fabric collage kind of thing. It’s not surprising we have a lot of that.”

Dubnick noted there was no theme artists who entered work had to follow, adding the piece had to be made from fibre, thread or fabric. Many of the pieces, however, showcase northern outdoor scenes and Dubnick said the reason why is likely because local residents are inspired by their surroundings.

The exhibit next month will feature an array of media completed in black and white. Dubnick said the public is free to enter photography, drawings, painting, printing and more as long as it’s high contrast black and white. The deadline to enter a submission is Jan. 24 and the artwork will be displayed starting Feb. 1.

“We try to have a different exhibit up every month,” she said.

In March, the arts council will feature a collection with the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils, which will also include a workshop. Then, in April, there will be an open exhibit for community members, which can include any type of artwork. Dubnick said the purpose of the display would be to meet new artists in the area and discover what type of art people are producing.
