Donald “Duck” Allan Despins was an incredibly beloved man to many people in this world. He was born on March 28, 1954, and grew up in Moose Jaw, SK. He was very athletic, and in high school, he competed in speed swimming, football and curling. It is through these sports that he met and developed amazing friendships that lasted his entire lifetime. Being a “Despins”, the connection to curling was strong in Don’s life. He won the Pepsi Canadian Schoolboy Championship in 1971, which opened the door for an opportunity to travel and curl in Europe as well. There have been endless memories made during his time spent in curling rinks across Saskatchewan over the years, and Don was thought highly of by teammates and competitors alike for his calm, confident, respectful presence and talent on the ice, as well as the fun and good times he had off the ice.
Don was friendly, personable and charismatic. These qualities, along with his good memory and outgoing nature lead to a career in sales. Through this, he was able to spend his time doing something he enjoyed; meeting people, getting to know people, and creating memorable connections with people. His path lead him to call Prince Albert home for most of his life, where he worked, raised his family and gave back to the community.
The Prince Albert National Park was Don’s playground. Some of the best times of his life were in the park with his brothers and his children, canoeing, fishing, sitting around a camp fire, and telling stories. He loved music, adventure, and had the best sense of humour.
He was a very special man. Don had a spark, an energy, a vibrant quality about him that was unique and rare. Don was a man who valued presence and time. He was an inspiration to all of us for his entire life with his courage, strength and character. And even into his last days and weeks he continued to be an example of integrity. He was taken away from this world too soon, but we are so proud to have known him and been a part of his life. He has made an impact on everyone who had the privilege of meeting him. His children will continue to live on as part of him, live by and embody the remarkable person he was and be a part of his lasting legacy.
Don leaves behind his loving wife, Janice; and her children, who supported and cared for him in the last years; his three loving children, Todd, Tyler, Robyn; his sister; his three brothers and their families, and many many cherished friends.
