Doreen Charles
June 12,1955 – May 26, 2020
It’s with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Doreen Charles on May 26, 2020 in Campbell River, BC. with family by her side.
Doreen was born and raised in La Ronge. She married Bertle Vancoughnett in 1972 and they raised 2 kids, Michael and Maureen in their 30 years together. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time on Lac La Ronge at Hurl Island and Kramer’s cabin often hopping on her Sea Doo to head out for a night or two. She was an avid golfer and fisherwoman and absolutely loved fishing salmon on the West Coast.
Doreen was a much loved and dedicated employee for over 30 years who embodied the Legal Aid spirit. Doreen started in the La Ronge office in the 70’s as a secretary and worked her way up to a legal assistant position. She was a master at working out the best deals possible for her clients and many a Crown went running scared when Doreen came to the negotiating table. She was a fluent Cree speaker and was instrumental in setting up the Cree court in the North.
Doreen will be lovingly remembered by her son, Mike (Tanya) and grandkids Mikaela, Tanner and Brooklyn; her daughter Maureen (Phil Clark) and grandsons Emry and Wynn; her brothers, Tom (Susan), Billy (Sylvia), Robby (Barb), Clarence (Lulu) and Mickey; sisters Lydia (Grant Gauthier), Vie, and Sandy and numerous nieces and nephews. Also remembered by many close friends, co-workers and acquaintances she’s impacted throughout her life.
Doreen was predeceased by her parents, Roderick and Grace Charles, and her sister Barbara.
Doreen was the greatest mother, grandmother, sister, aunty and friend one could have, and she’ll be so very missed by all who loved her and were blessed to know her.
Doreen has been cremated and due to Covid-19, plans to celebrate her life will take place in La Ronge at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask you to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society, an organization that was close to Doreen’s heart.
