Obituary for Ernest “Ernie” Sherman Roy
Ernest Sherman Roy passed away peacefully at the age of 74 at the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert on Sunday, May 20, 2018. Ernie was born on October 14, 1943, at his grandfather’s farm in Domremy SK. He attended school in Domremy, Notre Dame College in Prince Albert and then attended the University of Saskatchewan. Ernie taught school for thirty years with the Prince Albert Rural School Unit No.56, where he made friends that lasted a lifetime. Throughout his career he taught a variety of subjects in grades 6 through 12 at several schools, regularly asking for transfers so that his teaching skills remained fresh and challenged. His students became “his kids”, and he was proud of them as they moved into adulthood and chose their life paths. Ernie was a multi-talented man who enjoyed restoring furniture, cabinetry, general carpentry, mechanics, and gardening. He was an avid reader and many books passed through his hands during his lifetime. He also enjoyed many camping, fishing, and canoeing trips with family and friends over the years. Ernie had a beautiful tenor singing voice and sang with many choirs as well as the Captone Barbershop group. Singing brought him great joy, both with the choirs and at family events. Throughout his life, he, Margaret, and daughter Ann-Michelle enjoyed holidays together to many destinations. Ernie was a loving husband and father. After retirement from teaching, he was able to pursue his interests and hobbies more fully, spend more time traveling with Margaret, and playing cribbage together.
Ernie is survived by his wife and best friend of 53 years: Margaret; his daughter: Ann-Michelle; brother: Marcel Roy; sisters: Aline Trumier, Denise (Arsene) Robert; Sylvia (Walter) Saranchuk; sister-in-law: Norma Jean Halcro; and many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Ernie was predeceased by his father: Henri Roy; mother: Helene Guillet Roy Gagnon; step-father: Leslie Gagnon; father and mother-in-law: Norman and Gladys Kernohan; brothers-in-law: Don Halcro and Raymond Trumier; and sister-in-law: Theresa Roy.
