Gladys Marie Ronning (nee Jacobsen) “Nana” passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019.
Nana was born on July 30, 1921 in Loreburn, SK to parents Otto and Aagott Jacobsen. At 12 years of age, she helped her father move the livestock from Loreburn to the Prince Albert area. It was a 3-week journey on horseback. She Graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Prince Albert Holy Family Hospital in 1946. That same year, on October 23rd, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Ronning and shared 60 years together. They quickly began their family and spent the first few years on a farm south of Young, and then moved into Watrous. Once the children were old enough, Gladys returned to her career in nursing at the Watrous Hospital. Her professional, compassionate, kind demeanor made her the right candidate for her specialization in palliative nursing. In 1976, they moved to Prince Albert, at which time she nursed at Mount St. Joseph’s nursing home, from where she retired.
Nana was very involved in the Lutheran Church Ladies Aid and was a member of the Prince Albert Watsonaires. She picked up the sport of bowling later in life and even won a provincial championship! She loved to entertain friends and family – this always revolved around a meal, snack or picnic. She was a whiz in the kitchen and has proudly passed on her traditional Norwegian recipes to her family.
Nana was devoted to her family and loved spending time with each and every one of us. She was always there for us, was proud of our achievements, and took an interest in everything we did. She was kind and made a positive impact to all people she met and dealt with. She had a strong faith in the Lord, and we know that she rests in peace with our Heavenly Father.
She is survived by her children, Valerie Kalyn (Dennis Pryma), Rick Ronning (Heather); son-in-law Dave (Evange) Olsen; grandchildren, Tracey (Gary) Gurtler, Kim (Brad) Mayer, Michelle (Ray) Ouellette, Kris (Stephanie) Olsen, Kirsti (Les) Olson, Lars Ronning, Kristoffer Ronning, Katarina Ronning;grand daughter-in-law Deanna Moate, great grandchildren, Rachel (Wayne) Bishop, David Akers, Michael (Carlee) Akers, Whitney (Chris) Fehr, Ashley (Tom) Andres, Brendan Mayer, Caitlin (Jesse) Andres, Jordan Ouellette, Kyle Ouellette, Jensen Olsen, Sadie Olsen, Jillian Olsen, Hudson Olsen, Harper Olsen, Tyler Olson, Josh Olson and Jacob Olson; great-great grandchildren Nickolas Bishop, Hailey Bishop, Isaac Bishop, Ashlynn Akers; sister Kristine Beatty
She is predeceased by her husband, William Ronning (1908 – 2007), daughter Audrey Olsen (1947 – 1996), Grandson Michael Moate (1967 – 2015), siblings Leif Jacobsen, Doris Dixon and Odin Jacobsen.
We would like to thank the staff at River Breeze Retirement Complex in Prince Albert and the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home for showing such love, care and compassion to our Nana. These folks are to be commended for the job they do, each and every day.
