Munro, Hugh
Hugh Munro of Elk Ridge, Saskatchewan, beloved husband of Jo-Anne Lennard, passed away suddenly on April 21, 2025, at the age of 76 years, in Penticton, British Columbia. Hugh was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba in the fall of 1948. His deep love for nature began early, growing up in a remote log cabin on Little Cliff Lake with his parents, Hugh and Barbara, his two older sisters, Roberta (Barbara) and Kathryn, and his younger brother, Michael.
As a teenager, Hugh was very active in the Sea Cadets. Among his many accomplishments, he was honoured in 1964 as the second most outstanding Sea Cadet in Canada. Hugh began his first career in the mining industry as a Journeyman Miner in Snow Lake, Manitoba, a career he pursued for ten years. He then chose to further his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Geography from Brandon University in 1980, followed by a Master of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1981.
Hugh’s second career brought him to La Ronge, Saskatchewan, where he joined the La Ronge Region Community College (later becoming part of Northlands College) as a science and math instructor. He later moved into administration as a Senior Program Coordinator, focusing primarily on trades and mining-related programs, where he found great fulfillment in helping students graduate and launch successful careers in northern Saskatchewan’s mining industry. Throughout his mining and educational careers, he remained committed to improving workplaces through his active involvement in union leadership.
In 2010, Hugh and Jo-Anne embraced retirement at Elk Ridge, Saskatchewan, where they built their dream home surrounded by the boreal forest. Hugh especially cherished time spent with family and close friends, biking and hiking the trails around Prince Albert National Park, golfing, gardening, and tending to his yard. He was also deeply engaged in his community, serving several terms on the Elk Ridge Estates Condominium Board. Hugh is lovingly remembered by his wife Jo-Anne; his stepdaughter Kendel Lennard (Jordan Price); his sisters Kathryn Desai (Chandrakant Desai) and Roberta (Barbara) Munro; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Barbara Munro, and his brother Michael Munro.
Hugh was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be profoundly missed. His generous spirit, passion for living each day to its fullest, and thoughtful nature will never be forgotten. His kindness and joyful heart will live on in the actions and thoughts of all those who knew him.
At Hugh’s request, no service will be held. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice or perhaps do something Hugh would do, such as pick up litter along the highway, maintain a trail, enjoy a social with friends, plant a tree, or marvel at the abundant beauty of Saskatchewan’s sky and boreal forest. Condolences may be made to the family through kettlevalleymemorial.ca.
