It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Margaret Boyarchuk, at the age of 76 years on September 13, 2019, at the Victoria Union Hospital, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Joan was born to Joseph and Clara Wiest on January 14, 1943 in Smeaton, SK. Joan grew up on the farm north of Smeaton and during her middle years attended the old Academy Presentation of Mary in Prince Albert. In 1949, the family moved into Smeaton where she graduated from Smeaton School in 1962. After graduation, Joan joined the air force leading to many adventures in Eastern Canada that mom spoke so fondly of.
Following her time in the air force, Joan returned home to marry the love of her life, Eugene. Joan and Eugene were married October 19, 1963 and enjoyed a long happy marriage for almost 56 years. During this time, Joan and Eugene were blessed with three children, Mary-Ann, Brenda and Joe.
Mom and Dad enjoyed many years on the farm together. Along with farming, Joan worked very hard milking cows, raising chickens and pigs and many other animals. Mom loved animals and they played a huge part throughout her life. Her two precious cats Toby and Tia miss her very much.
One of mom’s true passions was her love for gardening. Mom was always proud of how well her garden grew and enjoyed filling the freezer and cold room with frozen vegetables and canned foods. She always made sure we never left the farm without a care package of goodies.
Another one of mom’s passions was travelling. Through the years, she explored many countries across the globe and loved to share stories about her travels and the people that she met. Travelling was one the things mom missed the most when her health started to decline.
Mom was a strong, very kind-hearted woman. She would help anyone that needed it and always worried more about her family than herself. One of mom’s most amazing hobbies was writing in her diary. She took a lot of joy in ensuring that she wrote all her thoughts and things that were important to her in her diary every day since she was 17 years old. We will hold her treasured memories very close to our hearts and we will miss her dearly.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Eugene; her daughters, Mary-Ann (Ken) Rolles, Brenda Boyarchuk; and her son, Joe (Jennifer) Boyarchuk; her sister-in-law, Anne Morris; and many nieces and nephews. Joan is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Clara Wiest; her sister, Mary-Ann Barr; her sister-in-law, Pearl Zaparaniuk; her brothers-in-law, Mike Zaparaniuk and Bill Morris; her nephew, Allan Zaparaniuk; her in-laws, Joseph & Mary Boyarchuk.
A Divinte Liturgy funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at the St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 752 14 Street West, Prince Albert, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Prince Albert SPCA, 1125 North Industrial Drive, Prince Albert, SK, S6V 5T1.
