Lilian Mary Brothwell, RN
Lilian was born in Hafford SK, to Andrew and Stella Ryhorchuk on December 14th, 1930. They moved to Melfort, SK, where Lilian and her 3 siblings: Allan, Gordon, and Sylvia; were raised and completed their schooling. Lilian was an amazing student and was recognized for her academic excellence with both science and math awards and was selected as her graduating class Valedictorian. Lilian graduated from the St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and began her nursing career in the small hospital in Wadena, SK, and then on to public health, visiting many small communities including Shellbrook and Big River.
Lil and Frank Brothwell were married in Melfort, SK, on June 4, 1955, and on August 30, 1956, they had their son Tom, and shortly thereafter, in October of the same year, they picked up and moved to Kemano, BC, where Lilian accepted a position as a nurse in the local hospital. She was the only medical staff doing the common nursing care, as well as much more. She performed many duties required in a small town without doctors or pharmacists.
On April 6, 1961, daughter Leanne joined the family. In 1966, the family moved to Prince Rupert, BC, and after a couple of years, in 1968, they returned to Saskatchewan and their residence in Prince Albert. Frank worked for the Prince Albert Pulp Company, and Lilian returned to Nursing at the Prince Albert Community Clinic until her retirement in 1992. In 1985, Lilian was able, with her daughter Leanne, to return to where her Mother was born in Zalischychi, Poland. Grandma took great pleasure in and will forever be remembered for: reading, taking pictures, baking, watching musicals & fashion shows with her grandkids.
