Loretta M. Clouthier passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, in Saskatoon, SK, at the age of 91 years. She was born Thursday, December 29, 1927 to Joseph and Valerie (Porlier) Wolters near Marcelin, SK. Loretta grew up on the family farm with her 9 brothers and sisters. She often recalled playing with her siblings, putting on plays and making music together in their family home. Her education began at the one room Ottawa School across the road from their home, and continued with high school a business course in Marcelin. Following high school, she found work at the Unemployment Insurance office in Prince Albert. Shortly after, she met Joseph/Jim Clouthier. They were married October 19, 1949, and began their life together. Jim soon began his career as a resource officer for the DNR and Loretta joined in the adventure. Their life led them to remote communities in Northern Saskatchewan, sometimes with primitive conditions, no road access and very limited communication with the outside world.
Their first home was in Carrot River, then came the transfer to The Pas, Manitoba where their first child, Dennis, was born. The next posting in Buffalo Narrows was challenging for a young mother, as it was secluded and only accessible by air at the time. To further complicate things, Jim had to be away for long stretches of time, leaving Loretta to handle the children, home and office; their only line of communication was the DNR radio. It was here that their second child, Karen, was born. Then they were off to La Ronge for a few years, followed by Hudson Bay where their two younger sons, Gary and Reid were born. In 1965, Loretta packed up her family one last time to move to Prince Albert, where she spent the next 50 years. In recent years, Loretta resided at Trinity Manor in Saskatoon where she enjoyed the availability of daily mass and prayers.
Loretta was always a deeply spiritual person. She and Jim were both active members of St. Joseph’s Parish. They were also very involved in the charismatic renewal of the Catholic church, hosting many prayer meetings in their home. She loved the scriptures, taught bible studies, and was always ready to pray for others. She was compassionate and spent over 30 years reaching out to those in need and administering communion to those who were sick or shut in. We rejoice that she is with her Lord!
After many years of outdoor adventures with Jim, Loretta had a special affinity for nature, and loved to work in her garden. Many happy hours were spent out of doors tending to her vegetables and flowers, or walking through God’s country up north. Loretta loved to share her knowledge of the flora and fauna in the woods around the family cabin at Wadin Bay, or teach her grandchildren about all of the interesting rocks. We are grateful that she was able to spend some time last summer at the cabin, where so many special memories have been made.
Loretta had a great love of art, and instilled this love in her children and grandchildren. She spent many happy hours creating beautiful pottery; mastering various hand-building techniques and glazing. She used these skills in later work teaching pottery at the Prince Albert Art Centre. She also had a natural aptitude for painting and pastels, and anything else that struck her fancy.
Loretta will be remembered as a loving, caring mother and grandmother, and for her talents, truth, compassion, and as a woman of God.
