She was predeceased by her loving husband Jan Wyma, her parents Edwin and Esther (nee Wellwood) Andahl, sister Lois Slater, sisters-in-laws Ev (Evertje) (Jack) Young, Jo (Johanna) (Frank) Aumack and brother-in-law Bill Rossmo.
Opal was born 11th of Sept. 1932 on her grandparent’s farm near Valley Centre, SK. She grew up in Saskatoon where she attended Bedford Road Collegiate and the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute where she took a secretarial course. She worked as an office assistant for a doctor for a few years.
Opal met the love of her life, Jan, in Feb 1952 at a dance. They were married 19th July 1952, just 4 months after their first date. Jan died just 6 weeks before their 60th Wedding Anniversary.
Mom loved the outdoors, whether working in the garden or taking long walks. She would often be found puttering outside even later in life when arthritis was impairing her mobility. She loved music so much that she taught herself to play her daughter’s accordion with some help from Lynn. After retirement, Dad bought her a portable piano where she would play to her heart’s content until arthritis in her hands made it too painful. Opal was a very caring person and her grandchildren brought her a lot of joy, especially her great-grandchild Beau.
Together Opal and Jan undertook a major project in 1976, building a log cabin at Candle Lake. This included felling and transporting trees to their home site where Opal did the major part of pealing the logs. This is where they spent their years of retirement enjoying the lake and living in their dream home for over 23yrs. During their early retirement, they were very active with the Candle Lake seniors.
Opal and Jan loved spending time fishing, camping and traveling around the country. Many trips were made across Western Canada. They enjoyed life as snowbirds and spent several winters in Arizona. Later on, they enjoyed spending time exploring Victoria during the winter months.
The family thanks Dr. Bischoff for the years he cared for Opal, and the staff at Pineview Care Home that cared for her with dignity, compassion, and understanding for over a year and a half.
A Graveside service will be held on Dec. 8 at 1:00 pm, at Candle Lake Community Church A celebration of life, will take place later in the spring. Donations can be made on Opal’s behalf to the Pineview Terrace Recreation program.
