Vernon John Studer passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital in Prince Albert, SK, on Friday, March 8, 2019, at the age of 93 years. Vern was born on Thursday, April 30, 1925, in St. Walburg, SK, to Adolph and Laura (nee Olivier) Studer. His early years were spent on the family farm in the Makwa area, then in 1936 the family moved up to Sulphide Lake. This would be the start of his life long love of the North and all it had to offer. Vern met Ida in Prince Albert and they were married on October 25, 1952. Thus, the adventure began, in 1958 they settled in La Ronge and here they raised their eight children.
Vern spent his life working and living in the North and when he acquired his pilots license in 1965, his opportunity for new adventure soared! Vern had a big heart and a big personality and loved to meet people. He made new friends wherever he went and never forgot them. Even though his work often took him away from home, Vern always remained an integral part of the La Ronge community. He knew just about everyone and always took the time to stop and talk to people.
Vern cherished his family and was passionate about spending time with them in his most favourite places where he felt so much at home. Any time of the year an adventure could always be found at Sulphide Lake: canoe trips into the wilderness, fishing trips, trapping, berry picking. Every time that Vern could share his bit of paradise made him very happy. Along with his family and the North, Vern’s next big love was music, singing, dancing and playing his guitar. He shared his love of music with each generation as they arrived just as it had been instilled in him as a child. As his children grew up and moved away, he and Ida were always eager to visit no matter how far they had to travel. If they didn’t drive, they would get in the plane and fly. If he didn’t seek the adventure, then it seemed to find him and of course it left him with an amazing story to tell afterwards!
Vern always loved to travel and in the last five years made many trips out to Manitoba and Alberta to spend time with his daughters. In August he travelled to British Columbia for his grandson’s wedding and spent this past Christmas visiting with family and friends in Saskatoon and Lloydminster.
In 2013 after 61 years of marriage Vern lost the love of his life Ida, although as a man of faith he took comfort in knowing that they would one day be together again. In 2016, after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Vern moved to Good Shepherd Villas in Prince Albert. Here once again he showed his strength, determination & resilience by immediately making new friends, re-kindling old friendships and developing an exercise routine; walking everyday!
Vern will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his eight children, twenty-three grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Duane Studer and family: Jason, Nathan and daughters Suri & Natalye; Darlene Studer and family: Michael (Cara), Laura , Evan (Liz) Kuley; Randy (Cindy) Studer and family: Daniel; son Jasper, Matt (Jasmine) daughter Quinn; Mark Studer (Estella) and family: Scott, Sarah Studer (Jay); daughters Halle & Heidi; Patricia Lynn Gordon and family: Twyla Dawn (Chris) Jordan, Shannon Gordon and daughter Julie, Cameron (Heather) Gordon and daughter Everly, Ethan Gordon; Lorie (Ray) Wourms and family: Chelsea (Jon) Keaden, Carter, Everett & Alaiya Sheppard; Gillian, Lauren (Justin) and Ryan Wourms; Joylene (Fred) Preun and family: Samara, Carlin and Kacey Preun; Carol (Cyril) Mcfarland and family: Emily, Eric and Adam (Hannah) Orr.
