Community meeting planned to discuss future of Patterson Park

Jul 19, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Dozens of trees are being removed from La Ronge’s Patterson Park for safety reasons.

“We did a thorough inventory of what was healthy and what was not, and we found about 50 or so trees were not healthy,” town administrator Stephen Conway said. “We drilled through a tree and found out the core of those trees were rotten.”

Conway also noted many of the trees near the beach were all ready leaning and were at-risk of falling. He added it’s important the town clears the rotting trees for liability issues and prevent anyone from sustaining any injuries from falling debris. The work, which began a few days ago, is expected to be completed in two weeks.

It’s also unknown at this time whether new trees will be planted to replace the ones cut down. Conway said there will likely be a community meeting in September, where town council will ask residents for direction on what they’d like to see in the park. Some questions residents will be asked include: Should the beach size increase? Should there be more tennis courts? Should a marina be developed? And more.
