Ski club ready for 2022/23 season

Nov 8, 2022 | 3:39 PM

While some residents of the tri-communities are unhappy about all the snow that fell this past week, others including those with the La Ronge Nordic Ski Club are pleased.

“The snow seems to be coming earlier and earlier every year,” club president Heather Bernardin said.

“There is a lot of snow for November. It doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, so that’s great. It gets everyone excited for skiing. Early snow is great because it’s so pleasant and enjoyable to get out and have fun and go for a ski. It’s put people in the mood for the ski swap and other social events coming up this season.”

The first event is the annual ski swap on Dec. 3 for those wanting to purchase or sell used ski gear. Prince Albert’s Fresh Air Experience will also attend for those wanting to purchase new items. If there are any items members know they already want, they are encouraged to pre-order and staff with Fresh Air Experience will bring it with them on that date.

Sask Cup Races 1 and 2 will occur Dec. 17 and 18 at the Don Allen Trails and that will be followed by the Solstice Ski to the Summit on Dec. 21 at Nut Point.

The annual Don Allen Saskaloppet is also scheduled for March 3 and 4. It’s the club largest event of the season and it typically attracts hundreds of skiers from throughout the province and beyond.

“[Residents] can watch for any updates on those on the club’s Facebook page or website,” Bernardin said.

Ski club memberships are available online as well. Those who do sign up are entitled to a number of perks including free ski lessons. Ski lessons for kids are usually held twice per month on Sundays at 2 p.m. weather depending, and the club has free skis for them to use throughout the season.

Trails throughout the area are also slowly being groomed. The trails at Nut Point Campground and at Don Allen are maintained by the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park, while the club focuses its efforts on the Saskaloppet trail.
