Delicious!

Lake Country Cottage serving up satisfaction for over two decades

May 31, 2023 | 12:48 PM

Nestled within the heart of Saskatchewan’s beautiful boreal forest, Lake Country Cottage has for over two decades been serving residents, returning snowbirds, or people just passing through.

Whether it’s breakfast or dinner, the small family run restaurant offers something for every appetite.

Popular menu items include their dry ribs, sweet potato fries, omelettes, and variety of homemade beef and bison burgers. Co-owner Ruth Timm explained the secret to their delicious burgers is they are made from local product, supplied by local farmers in the area. She added their customers know the difference. A customer favorite is the beefalo burger which is ½ beef and ½ buffalo.

“If we run out and have to use store bought product, its a 1,000 per cent different,” she said.

A proud tradition they are known for is their turkey dinner every Sunday.

“I think they’d shoot us if we quit,” she joked.

A must try, or retry, is the Pickerel Fry done 3 times throughout the year. Every Good Friday, third Friday in September and New Years Eve, locally supplied pickerel is prepared and served. Tables go fast, so booking ahead is a great idea.

The restaurant is also a proud supporter of the local legion, soup is prepared, packaged up and sold frozen to enjoy at your leisure. Half the proceeds from the soup sales goes to the legion. The restaurant also sells frozen pot pies for $5 and a dollar from every sale goes to help the legion.

“Both our fathers served so it’s a legacy to keep going and also teaches younger people what’s its all about,” Ruth said.

Summer season marks the return of the restaurant’s small ice cream stand out front. If you have a favorite flavor, they most likely have it. Ruth acknowledged she looks forward to the warmer season.

“It’ll be nice to see all our snowbirds and friends coming back. We miss them in the winter,” she said.

This June marks the restaurant’s 24th and so of course being open for as long as they have, Ruth and her husband, Vic, have had the ability to serve generations of family members.

“It’s hard to fathom the fact some of them were just babies when we started,” she said.
