Saskatchewan communities experience record or near record-setting cold February

Mar 4, 2019 | 12:00 PM

As the province enters March and begins to thaw, it’s time to look back on one of the coldest February’s Saskatchewanians ever experienced.

For a vast number of communities Feb. 2019, ranked in their top five coldest average temperatures.

Unlike the others, La Ronge will have the bragging rights of a new place-holder in their top spot. The community hit an all time monthly low average temperature of -23.6 C, which is good enough for the coldest month in the 53 year weather-record history of the northern town.

Although not the chilliest, five different stations reported the second coldest Feb. on record, including North Battleford. The city experienced an average temperature of -24.1 C. North Battleford has kept weather-records for 77 years.

Key Lake was the coldest weather-station in the province last month with a mean temperature of -27.5 C, making it the third coldest February average in the communities 43 years of temperature monitoring.
