Nominations now open for tri-community awards gala next month

Nominations are open until March 20 for the second annual Tri-Community Awards and Recognition Gala.

There have been major changes to how the gala was organized this year including new award categories and a recently announced awards selection committee. According to La Ronge and District Chamber of Commerce President Crystal Everest, the changes should create a sense of transparency and clarity, which was otherwise lacking in 2018.

“I myself had issues as well concerning some of the voting aspects and basically it was a lack of nominations overall,” she said. “Some of the categories really only got one nomination, so it was kind of hard to create a neutral ground when you only have one nomination in place.”

There are nine award categories this year and there are noticeable differences compared to 2018. Some nominations have been renamed, some have been compiled into a single award, some are brand new and others have been removed all together. For example, there is no Business of the Year or Leader of the Year award categories.

The full list of this year’s nomination categories include Retail Business of the Year, Food and Beverage Business of the Year, Service, Industry and Trade of the Year, Non-Profit of the Year, Home-Based Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Artpreneur of the Year, Young Entrepreneur/Leader Award and Post-Secondary Advocacy Award sponsored by Northlands College. Anyone interested in making a nomination can do so here.

“Artpreneur of the Year is honouring individual artists, artisans and art-based businesses in the tri-community area,” Everest said. “Youth Entrepreneur and Leader Award is for anyone under the age of 25, who kind of have some unique skills and exceptional initiatives on business ventures.”

Meanwhile, the awards selection committee consists of non-chamber executive members and non-gala organizing committee members. All members of the awards selection committee volunteered and they are Deanna Belhumeur, Karla Hardcastle, Betty Hutchinson, Clarence Neault, Angela Plunz, Tayven Roberts, Emily Ross and Thomas Sierzycki. By having these individuals going through the nominations and voting on the award winners, Everest stated it should ensure the gala remains neutral and bias-free.

The Tri-Community Awards and Recognition Gala will occur April 27 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. Tickets will be available for purchase as of April 1 and will be available at the Lac La Ronge Visitor Centre or any Chamber board member. Corporate packages are currently available.
