Churchill Chargers training hard for first game of the season Friday
After a winless football season in 2018, La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School Chargers have been training hard in recent weeks.
“We started Thursday, Aug. 22,” Head Coach Gabe Andrews said. “We’ve had seven practices so far, so we’ve been going every day for the last week and a little bit. We’ve got three more practices before we make our first travel game and first game of the season. We are well on our way to preparing for it.”
The Chargers will play their first game Sept. 6 against the Nipawin Bears before hosting their home opener Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. against the Tisdale Tornadoes. Andrews stated there are about 35 athletes attending practices regularly, but he noted it’s a fairly young team with a small incoming group of Grade 12 players. Even though the Chargers didn’t have a single win in 2018, he said the team was still competitive in all the games.
“Wins and losses will come, so I want to be competitive against the three teams who we will be facing,” Andrews said. “Our goal is to finish ahead of Nipawin or Melfort in our conference, so we can qualify for provincial play.”
