La Ronge deploys new garbage truck

A new garbage truck valued at approximately $270,000 is now in use in La Ronge.

The garbage truck arrived earlier this month and was purchased using money from the federal government’s Gas Tax Fund. La Ronge Chief Administrative Officer Steven Brown explained the truck is currently in use and it should provide a more effective level of service to residents by having garbage collected a bit quicker.

“It’s a more modern truck. It’s keeping with the times,” he said. “This one has more bells and whistles to kind of grab the bin in one full swoop where the other one was a bit more manual.”

Brown noted, for now, waste removal will require the same level of human resources with the new truck versus the old truck, but any spare time generated will be put to use completing other tasks in town.

The previous truck is still operational, and Brown added there is no plan at this time to sell it.

“If something breaks down, it’s always good to have a back up,” he said. “To get parts and what not from another area can take some time to get it back up and operational.”

Air Ronge received a new garbage truck back in July 2019 at the cost of $230,000. The new truck required the additional purchase of nearly 400 new bins.
