Residents encouraged to access seed library this May

A project meant to last forever and grow over time begins May 3 at La Ronge’s Alex Robertson Public Library.

“The seed library loans seeds to gardeners,” library administrator Sean Stares said about the facility’s newest addition. “At the end of the growing season, the gardeners save seeds from their plants and return a portion of the seeds to the library.”

Stares explained the project will be starting with 23 varieties of seeds people can check out that are known for being fairly easy to grow and harvest. The seeds will be kept in a card catalogue and an office for safekeeping.

There will be a limited of three packages per person, at first, and people will need to register for the project by filling out a form.

“The seeds are heirloom, so once the growing season is over, we ask people to return the seeds that they borrowed,” Stares said. “We will be providing information about how to plant and save seeds during our program over the summer.”

To celebrate the launch of the seed library, Alex Robertson administration will be hosting a giveaway on April 29 between 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Residents will be given everything they need to grow their own beefsteak tomatoes.

Stares mentioned seed libraries have been around Saskatchewan for some time but noted interest in gardening has particularly grown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said gardening skills can be an important skill in Northern Saskatchewan when it comes to food security and the increasing cost of food.

“We have all sorts of gardening books people can check out as well,” Stares said. “I think just being outside and enjoying nature is a wonderful thing for people to do this summer.”
